February is Black History Month

KFC website development interactive contest

What exactly is Black History Month?

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history.

The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.

In the decades the followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the Civil Rights Movement and a growing awareness of black identity, Negro History Week had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses. President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."

Since then, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The 2012 theme pays tribute to the ways in which black women have shaped the United States and its history.

Mediaura is proud to have assisted in developing and implementing an exciting music-based initiative for KFC's Pride 360 initiative for four years in a row. Pride 360 expanded on black history month, emphasizing the importance of Family, Individuality,  Community, and Heritage as a year round promotion. The KFC Hitmaker website, developed by Mediaura, an important piece of Pride 360, was developed to celebrate black music month (June). Hitmaker was an online music contest where contestants were encouraged to sing, rap, or even create instrumental pieces that carried the theme of Pride 360. Fans were allowed to vote on their favorite songs and each year the best contestants were featured on a CD and won prizes that helped further their music career. Some contestants even made appearances at other KFC sponsored events and even on BET!

Our team was very passionate about this contest, as each year over the months of June and July we would get to hear all of the great songs since we had to audition them for compliancy with the contest. We also got to communicate with the fans, and when we announced the prize to the winners you could hear the excitement over the phone in their voices.

Unfortunately, the Hitmaker contest has been discontinued, but we encourage people everywhere to take a moment and reflect on what black history month means, and to keep in mind the principles of Pride 360.

Family Health Center

Mediaura is a company that is committed to giving back to our community. It is our philosophy that when you invest in your community, help it to grow and develop, the return on that investment is priceless. You can see that ideology permeated in everything we do and responsible citizenship is one of the cornerstones of our business. This is why we frequently volunteer, sponsor and donate our services to community programs that we feel are doing wonderful things to improve the lives of others. Any company, no matter how large or small, can always help others out in some measure. Remember, the most valuable thing you can ever give someone, more than money, is your time.

Our most recent pro-bono project has been developing a website for the Family Health Center.

Family Health Center

The Family Health Centers of Clark, Floyd and Harrison Counties are located in Jeffersonville, New Albany and Corydon Indiana. Each community health center is unique as the town in which it is located, but all share the same mission:

“To provide health care to the low-income underinsured and uninsured residents of Southern Indiana.”

They strive to provide high quality primary health care in the communities they serve with special emphasis on caring for the medically underserved and uninsured. Their board certified physicians and nurse practitioners  offer a full range of primary health care services. They welcome any person seeking care regardless of the ability to pay. They accept Medicaid and Medicare, and offer a sliding fee scale based on income for any person who is uninsured.

Mediaura's Contribution

We were proud to build a website for them that highlights all of the programs and services these facilities have to offer.

Customize Your Facebook Timeline

Facebook Timeline

Facebook Timeline Louisville Website Development

Like it or not, Facebook's Timeline is here to stay. The reaction to the social media giant's new interface has been met with mixed reviews. It may have not had the public reception Facebook expected; but those that now use it have accepted the inevitable change, while those that would have preferred things to say the same are trying to hold on to their current design as long as possible. However, soon enough, Timeline will eventually find its way to their page.

Timeline Review

At Mediaura, we have been experimenting with the new design since it was announced at last year's F8 Tech Conference. As we sat listening to Mark Zuckerberg discuss all of the exciting changes coming to Facebook, there were many things we loved (i.e. the Spotify integration) and there were other aspects that made us a little more hesitant (see: Timeline). Yet we opted to reserve our judgement until it became available for developers to experiment with and try out. Much like us, the developer (and user) feedback has been almost universal. The benefit of Timeline is that it allows you to get information about a person at a quick glance. Almost everyone has been thrilled with the customizable aspects of Timeline, because anytime you give users the opportunity to express their creativity, amazing things usually happen. Graphic designers were undoubtedly the first to embrace the new template, and a quick Google search will send you to many websites showcasing some of their finest work. And I highly recommend you do so, because many of them are quite impressive.

However, below that top section, things get a little tricky. There seems to be no real rhyme or reason to how information is displayed. Is it the most recent? The most popular? Sometimes it varies. Do I really need to know what a casual acquaintance was doing on May 12, 1999? Probably not. But it can also be nice to see where I was three years ago in my life versus where I am today. Is the constant update in the chat bar window a good idea or is it just cluttering up my Facebook page? Now you can start to see why the reviews have been mixed.

Customize The Template

But as I said, we all are thrilled with the ability to make our pages a little more unique. The ability to assign a "cover" image gives your page a little more personality and can set the tone for what the reader may learn below. If you're a photographer, perhaps you'd like to show off your work. A musician? Showcase your band. There really is no limit except your imagination and the dimension of the space.

We have created a blank template for you to use in order to begin working on your own design. The grey box is where your default Facebook profile image will appear, and the white area is yours to Photoshop until your heart's content!

Facebook Timeline Template

Download the template file here.

Feel free to share whatever great designs you come up with at our Facebook page.

In the meantime, we'll be waiting to see what other tricks Facebook has up its sleeve.

The Brennan House

Helmed by our Creative Director, Donovan DeFerraro, Mediaura recently redesigned the website for The Brennan House.

The Brennan House serves as the home of Preservation Louisville, which has a full-time executive director and maintains the house and family collection as part of its mission to protect and promote the cultural, architectural and environmental heritage of our community. The house is available to rent for private parties, weddings and corporate events.

The Old Website

While the previous website held valuable information about the home and its functional capacity, it did little to convey its rich history and the beauty of the venue itself.

The Old Brennan House Website

Brennan House Former Website

As you can see, the old design was full of unused "real estate" and empty design space that could have been utilized for more information, such as images.

The New Website Design

Mediaura Website Design

Louisville Website Design

This custom-designed website, is full of both historic and current photos of the Historic Home, along with valuable information regarding its services (i.e. wedding venue, etc).

As a company, we are proud to call Louisville home and take a personal interest in helping to share the city's wonderful history.

If you would like to view the entire website and learn more about this beautiful Historic Home, please visit http://thebrennanhouse.org/

Hayden Craig & Grant Launches New Website

We love working with attorneys to help them enhance their digital presence on the web. Often, what it takes to be a success in the field of law (forward-thinking, concise content, informative, competitive, etc.) are all things that translate easily into the digital realm.

Recently, Mediaura was contracted to help Hayden, Craig & Grant revamp their overall branding (logo, business cards, envelopes, letterhead) along with their online presence.

Aside from programming it to include a built-in CMS (content management system), we also made sure that it was optimized for Search Engine Optimization & Marketing; which is crucial for any law firm currently maintaining a digital presence in the marketplace. The overall aesthetic was to marry the corporate, professional look of a reputable law firm with a historical touch. Hayden, Craig & Grant is located in the historic downtown area of Louisville, Kentucky and they were keen to highlight that piece of their history.

Hayden, Craig & Grant have a wide-variety of services in their arsenal, so on the interior pages we made sure to not only list their specialty areas of practice, but to also give a general overview of what those services entail. This allows the viewer to have a more in-depth look at their law firm and what it is about.

In addition, we also listed the attorney contact information, with a hyper-link to their “Linked-In” social media pages. In order to keep a clean and well-organized format, we elected to style the pages so that pertinent attorney information would be immediately available for all members of the firm.

When the viewer elects to learn more about a particular attorney, they are then directed to a page that contains a more in-depth at the individual.

This area not only provides the user with the necessary contact information for the individual attorney, but it also gives an in-depth look at their professional background, education, experience, and area of expertise.

We also included a built-in contact firm should users elect to reach out to the firm directly with any questions or to retain their services. The google map illustrates to the viewer the location of the firm itself.

In order to announce the launch of the new website and the addition of a new partner, we also coordinated with Hayden, Craig & Grant on a customized email blast that went out to thousands of their contacts.

Above is how the email appeared to the recipients of the announcement.

These are just a few of the pages and features of the newly launched Hayden, Craig & Grant website. Visit the page today to learn more about this competitive and internationally renowned law firm.

We were recently contacted by the Louisville Downtown Management District to help design and update their wayfinding signs posted throughout the city. This was a project that our team was quite excited about, because these signs are beneficial not only to the visitors trying to navigate their way downtown in a new city, but also to the many businesses located in the district.

The benefit to static signs such as this, is that they can withstand the elements of our city quite well. They make a city seem more welcoming to people who are in town on business, attending a conference, or simply checking out all of the fabulous businesses residing in Downtown Louisville.

For business interested in indoor wayfinding signs, we recommend checking out our ProBuilder Software. Our patent-pending turnkey software solution utilizes content management systems in conjunction with digital signage. It’s another way to inform people in your hotel, office building, conference center, etc. about notable places in the area, while simultaneously utilizing the latest technology to generate ad revenue for your business.

If you’d like more information on wayfinding or digital signage, please call our office at (502) 554-9649.
